Oral and maxillofacial surgeons evaluate abnormalities and lesions of the mouth and jaws. A diagnostic examination is performed and is sometimes followed by a biopsy, during which a small sample of the lesion is taken and submitted for microscopic examination. Treatment of the abnormality or lesion is dictated by the diagnosis resulting from the biopsy.
Treatment of localized lesions of the mouth and jaws can often be carried out in the office under local anesthesia and/or IV sedation. More extensive conditions may require hospitalization.
Both physicians and dentists often refer patients to our office for evaluation of mouth and jaw lesions.
